Sonic Youth - Youth Against Fascism

I first heard this song 23 years ago and listened to it on repeat; after hearing that UKIP won 135 seats in local elections last night in the UK it seems an appropriate time to replay  Kim and Thurston...

I'm not at all surprised ....historically times of austerity have always fanned the flames of fascism; disempowered communities turned off by conservatives who are ideologically opposed to welfare state expansion have no-one else to vent at but the immigrant/ the benefit cheat/ single mum....

And with the tripling of university tuition fees under the current coalition government and the scrapping of the education maintenance allowance down south,  it is no bloody wonder that the giant turd Farrage and thug friends got elected...

Of course we have the EU elections here in Finland on Sunday so it's really interesting to see what's going to happen here as the UKIP equivalent, the True Finn party, have made massive inroads of late...It is too depressing to think about so all I can do now is listen to Sonic Youth.  Loud.  And
hope that this discontent somehow translates into yes votes in Scotland come September 18th...

But positive news!

Tomorrow we are off to the first festival of the summer in Helsinki, the multicultural village festival and we can  not wait!  85,000 people attended last year and I hear it's even bigger this year.   The theme is South America and there is an excellent kids field as well as brilliant talks from disability rights activists, a Moroccan journalist is speaking on life in Morocco post-Arab Spring, small scale farmers and climate change in Indonesia, notions on the Mexican Zapatistas and Zapatista autonomy and Latin American communities in Finland...right up my street!
